The Story:
Acquiring notable pre-1877 American bookbindings is an ongoing priority for AAS. One recent acquisition is this copy of Fireside Fairies, in an unusual publisher’s cloth binding printed in five colors. The late 1840s was a time of innovation in the design of American publishers’ bindings. D. Appleton was among those who experimented briefly with printed cloth bindings.
