Indignation Meeting! Down with All Monopolies!… Wooster, Ohio: 1853. [catalog record]
Gift of Thomas W. Streeter, ca. 1955.
The Story:
The indignation referred to here sparked after directors of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Rail-Road Company gave one of their own exclusive use of all railcars in Wooster, Ohio. This locked out local wheat growers, causing grain prices to drop. Broadsides like this call-to-meeting were intended to be ephemeral—they were printed on inexpensive paper and posted outdoors for public reading—consequently they rarely survive in the historical record.
