The Details:
The Mother’s Remarks on a Set of Cuts for Children. Parts I-II. Philadelphia: T. S. Manning for Jacob Johnson, 1803. [catalog record]
Purchase, 1911; plates: bequest of d’Alté A. Welch, 1970.
The Story:
This set of books, engraved cards, and wooden case constitutes one of the earliest known educational games by an American publisher. It came to AAS in parts: the books and case were purchased at auction by Brigham, and the important d’Alté Welch bequest supplied the missing cards. A pupil selected a card, each bearing six numbered images corresponding to entries in the books. Then the student spelled out the words using the supplied letters.
