The Details:

Isaiah Thomas. “General Catalogue of Books Printed in the British Colonies before the Revolution” fascicles 3 & 5, compiled 1800-1810. [catalog record]

Bequest of Isaiah Thomas, 1831.

The Story:

It was Isaiah Thomas’s long-standing ambition to compile a comprehensive checklist of pre-1776 American imprints. Although he did not complete the project, his extensive notes make up fourteen fascicles preserved at AAS. Thomas proudly noted that this foundational work in American bibliography “is, I am certain, the only Catalogue of American printed Books, of any consequence, or any way general, to be met with, or ever has been made.”
