Bequest of Samuel F. Haven, Jr., 1862.
The Story:
Isaiah Thomas’s checklist lay untouched until the late 1850s, when the son of AAS librarian Samuel Foster Haven revisited it. Samuel, Jr. compiled slips with titles found in library catalogues and advertisements. The checklist was well advanced when, in 1862, Haven was killed at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia. His work was published by AAS in 1874, fittingly as an appendix to the second edition of Thomas’s The History of Printing.
