Thomas Nast drawing depicting an alderman dressed in a checkered suit placing his proper right hand on another man’s shoulder. The alderman smokes a cigarette and holds a bag of money in his pocket. The other man holds a club and a flag reading “Anarchy” in his hands, and has a ball of “dynamite” in his pocket. Behind them, a riot between police and civilians is taking place. Based on the Haymarket Riot in Chicago, May 4, 1886.

Depiction of the Battle of Little Bighorn and the death of General Custer. A Native American man “Old Cow” holds Custer’s heart on a spear. Other Native American chiefs and soldiers are named in English below their picture. A letter dated 7/28/1883 from donor Abraham Firth describes the provenance of the drawing: Firth obtained it from Gustave Finotti, a former Italian consul and farmer in Lankton, Dakota, who claimed to have served on the jury of Brave Bear and found this drawing in his cell when Finotti visited him in prison. Finotti sent the drawing to Firth, who gave the drawing to AAS. The second page of the letter is possibly in Finotti’s hand, describing that Brave Bear was the artist and is depicted as holding the heart on the spear in the picture.
