Mather Family Collection
The American Antiquarian Society holds a rich collection of American and English editions of the writings of the Mather family published before 1820. This collection is comprised of the works of Richard Mather (1596-1669) of Dorchester, Massachusetts, and his descendants, notably his son Increase (1639-1723) and grandson Cotton (1663-1728), plus the works of other family members included in Thomas J. Holmes's bibliography The Minor Mathers, The Mather Family Collection contains over 450 titles and is preeminent among the very strong Mather collections at the Boston Public Library, the University of Virginia (which holds the William Gwinn Mather-Tracy W. McGregor Collection), and the Massachusetts Historical Society.
