Learned Societies

The publications of American and foreign learned societies, past and present, form a collection closely related to the Institutions Collection. The societies included in the collection range from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia to the Zamorano Club of Los Angeles. The collection includes approximately 6,700 volumes (in bound or pamphlet form) of transactions, proceedings, annual reports, and miscellaneous publications. The American Antiquarian Society's own publications, including copies of the Transactions, the Proceedings, and all books, pamphlets, and offprints published by AAS, were until recently shelved here but now form a discrete collection.

Listed below are the names of learned societies for which AAS owns at least one item and likely quite a few more. The checklist was compiled in 1987 and thus is incomplete. Most of the items added to the collection since 1987 have their own records in the AAS General Catalog. However, many items remain uncatalogued. Consult the Readers' Services staff to locate all holdings for any of these learned societies.

Foreign learned societies, to which there is at present no bibliographical access, are grouped by country and arranged alphabetically by name within each group.
